Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of the State of Israel, addresses the general debate of the 78th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 19 - 26 September 2023). This video is available in multiple languages. Click the settings ⚙️ button to change the language track. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today (22 Sep) said, “we must not give the Palestinians a veto over new peace treaties with Arab states.” Addressing the General Assembly’s annual high-level debate, Netanyahu said, “Palestinians could greatly benefit from a broader peace. They should be part of that process, but they should not have a veto over the process.” “He said, “when the Palestinians see that most of the Arab world has reconciled itself to the Jewish state, they too, will be more likely to abandon the fantasy of destroying Israel, and finally embrace a path of genuine peace with it.” The Israeli Prime Minister told the Assembly that the Abraham accords “heralded the dawn of a new age of peace, but I believe that we are at the cusp of an even more dramatic breakthrough, an historic peace between Israel and Saudi Arabia. Such a peace, he said, “will go a long way to ending the Arab-Israeli conflict. It will encourage other Arab states to normalize their relations with Israel. It will enhance the prospects of peace with the Palestinians. It will encourage a broader reconciliation between Judaism and Islam, between Jerusalem and Mecca, between the descendants of Isaac and the descendants of Ishmael. Netanyahu concluded by saying, “let us harness our resolve and our courage to stop the curse of a nuclear Iran and rolled back its fanaticism and aggression. Let us bring forth the blessings of a new Middle East that will transform lands once written with conflict and chaos into fields of prosperity and peace.” The Abraham Accords are a series of bilateral agreements signed between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, as well as Morocco. - The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. General debate website: 🤍 On-demand Videos of each speaker: 🤍 The theme of the 78th session of the General Assembly, including the general debate, will be: "Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all." This theme encompasses the recognition that we are at a crossroads in history and that the path ahead will be decisive in determining not only our future, but that of generations to come. Accordingly, we must work creatively to preserve and to further strengthen multilateralism, by re-dedicating ourselves to upholding and defending its centerpiece, the Charter of the United Nations. Therefore, it is imperative that we prioritize rebuilding trust and reigniting meaningful global solidarity by using our collective power and forge ahead, with courage and determination, to do all that we can humanly do to deliver the future we want, by regaining the lost momentum and accelerating action towards sustainable development, in order to achieve Peace, Prosperity, Progress and Sustainability for all our People. In this context, the PGA calls on Member States to contemplate how we can undertake coordinated purposive action to rebuild international peace and security; to incentivize bold and decisive leadership in the fight against climate change and to halt the further destruction of the environment; to bolster efforts to promote and to ensure the full enjoyment of human rights and dignity by all during the upcoming session of the General Assembly. Russia's UN Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya interrupts the start of a Security Council meeting to object to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky speaking ahead of the other members. "There is a solution for this if you agree. You stop the war and President Zelensky will not take the floor," Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, who presides over the Council, tells the Russian official. Interested in licensing this video ? Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, addresses the general debate of the 78th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 19 - 26 September 2023). - Addressing the General Assembly, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned Member States, “The mass destruction is gaining its momentum. The aggressor is weaponizing many other things and those things are used not only against our country but against all of yours as well.” Speaking today (19 Sep) at the High-level week of the General Assembly, Zelenskyy remembered that Ukraine gave up its nuclear arsenal, at the time the third largest in the world. The Head of State added, “The world then decided Russia should become a keeper of such power. Yet, history shows it was Russia who deserved nuclear disarmament the most back in the 1990s. And Russia deserves it now. Terrorists have no right to hold nuclear weapons. No right.” Zelenskyy also said that “since the start of the full-scale war, the Ukrainian ports in the Black and Azov Seas have been blocked by Russia.” He continued, “Until now, our ports on the Danube River remain the target for missiles and drones. And it is a clear Russia’s attempt to weaponize the food shortage on the global market in exchange for recognition for some, if not all, of the captured territories. Russia is launching the food prices as weapons.” “Is there any sense to reduce nuclear weapons when Russia is weaponizing nuclear power plants? Scary question. The global security architecture offers NO response or protection against such a treacherous radiation threat… And there is no accountability for radiation blackmailers so far,” noted the President of Ukraine. Addressing Member States, Zelenskyy added, “And the goal of the present war against Ukraine is to turn our land, our people, our lives, resources into a weapon against you against you, the international rules-based order. Many seats in the General Assembly Hall may become empty if Russia succeeds with its treachery and aggression.” For the Head of State, “as nukes are restrained, likewise the aggressor must be restrained and all its tools and methods of war.” “Each war now can become final, but it takes our unity to make sure that aggression will not break in again,” added Zelenskyy. He also noted, “I am aware of the attempts to make some shady dealings behind the scenes. Evil cannot be trusted ask Prigozhin if one bets on Putin’s promises. Please, hear me. Let unity decide everything openly.” Zelenskyy said that “while Russia is pushing the world to the final war, Ukraine is doing everything to ensure that after Russian aggression no one in the world will dare to attack any nation.” The Ukrainian President concluded, “Weaponization must be restrained. War crimes must be punished. Deported people must come back home. And the occupier must return to their own land. We must be united to make it. And we will do it. Slava Ukraini.” The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter through effective multilateralism - Security Council, 9421st meeting. Chapters: 00:00 - Intro (will be trimmed after premiere) 17:56 - Start of Meeting After Break Watch Here: 🤍 Secretary-General António Guterres today (20 Sep) told the Security Council that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “is aggravating geopolitical tensions and divisions, threatening regional stability, increasing the nuclear threat, and creating deep fissures in our increasingly multipolar world.” Addressing a High-Level meeting on Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter through Effective Multilateralism, Guterres said, “we deeply regret that Russia ended its participation in the Black Sea Initiative in July of this year. And that, immediately upon leaving, Russia launched a bombardment of Ukrainian ports and grain storage facilities on the Black Sea and the Danube River.” He stressed that “attacks against terminals and grain stores are unacceptable and such assaults must end.” The Secretary-General urged “all countries to do their part to prevent further escalation, and to lay the foundations for sustainable peace.” He said the United Nations “are fully committed to the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, within its internationally recognized borders.” Guterres said, “this war is already causing limitless suffering. Its continuation risks further perilous escalation. There is never an alternative to dialogue, diplomacy, and a just peace.” Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, “Russia has killed at least tens of thousands of our people and turned millions into refugees by destroying their homes. Most of the world recognizes the truth about this war. It is a criminal and unprovoked aggression by Russia against our nation, aimed at seizing Ukraine's territory and resources.” Zelenskyy said, “humankind no longer pins its hopes on the UN when it comes to the defence of the sovereign borders of nations. World leaders are seeking new platforms and alliances that could reduce the disastrous scope of problems, the problems that are met here within these walls with rhetoric, rather than real solutions with aspirations to compromise with killers.” United States’ Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, “in this war, there is an aggressor and there is a victim. One side is attacking the core principles of the UN Charter, the other tries to defend them.” For over a year and a half, Blinken said, “Russia has shredded the major tenants of the United Nations Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, international humanitarian law and flaunted one Security Council resolution after another.” He said, “President Putin is betting that if he keeps doubling down on the violence, that if he's willing to inflict enough suffering on enough people, the world will cave on its principles, and Ukraine will stop defending itself. But Ukrainians are not giving up for they seen what life would look like if they submit to Russian control.” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, for his part said, “the balance of needs which have been enshrined in the Charter since the collapse of the USSR and the establishment of independent states in its place, the US and its satellites have egregiously and openly interfered in the domestic affairs Ukraine, as was publicly and even with pride recognized by the Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland in 2013.” Lavrov said, “in our western opponents’ rhetoric, we hear slogans, invasion, aggression, annexation, not a word about the root causes of the problems, where they cultivated and encouraged openly Nazi regimes which openly rewrote the outcomes of the Second World War and the history of their own people.” He said, “a substantive negotiation based on facts and respect for all of the requirements of the UN Charter, is something which the West has have has avoided.” High-level open debate aims to address the implications of Russia's aggression against Ukraine with regard to multilateralism based on international law, including the Charter of the United Nations, and to consider all the necessary collective efforts to reinforce the international rules-based order and strengthen multilateralism. At a time when the multilateral order based on the respect of international law is seriously challenged by a war of aggression, leaders are expected to come together and reiterate the importance of upholding the Charter to promote and defend effective multilateralism. This meeting aims to invoke the need to work together to prevent future violations of international law and to promote the peaceful resolution of conflicts through diplomatic means and dialogue. The high-level open debate will be chaired by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Albania, Edi Rama. Screenshot Credit: UN Photo/Manuel Elías
Watch the full moment the Albanian prime minister exchanged terse words with the Russian delegate in unprecedented scenes at the UN Security Council. Russia has objected to the proposal to hand the floor over to Volodymyr Zelensky before security council members can speak. However, Albanian prime minister Edi Rama says the notice of speaking orders was given to members in advance, and says the objection should have been decided beforehand. He adds this is not a “special operation” by Albania - a nod to Russia’s term for its war in Ukraine - and that it is in line with the committee’s practices. #russia #ukraine #war Subscribe to The Telegraph with our special offer: just £1 for 3 months. Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, addresses the general debate of the 78th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 19 - 26 September 2023). This video is available in multiple languages. Click the settings ⚙️ button to change the language track. The President of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, said that “as independent nations increasingly align themselves towards cooperation and convergence, certain powers are attempting to incite conflicts in different regions.” Speaking at the High-level week of the General-Assembly today (19 Set), Raisi continued “Employing a cold war mentality, they strive to reconstitute blocks on a global scale. This regressive endeavor poses a significant threat to the security and prosperity of nations.” Raisi said that “the Islamic Republic of Iran's staunchly maintains that the formation of new East West divide should not be permitted to take shape.” According to him, “making trade corridors unsafe. diminishing countries from allies to dependents, stifling the economic progress of sovereign nations and fomenting proxy wars across Asia and Europe are all elements of this sinister chain.” The Iranian President continued, “Ironically, these actions are put forth in the name of defending democracy. However, the global community, including nations in West Asia, have discerned the true essence of Western democracy. An appellation that all too often is a codename for coup d’etat, occupations and ongoing wars. Referring to the Iranian nuclear agreement, Raisi said, “The United States of America must explain transparently and demonstrate in a verifiable fashion that it does wish to reach a proper conclusion and show its commitment and choose a path – either JCPOA or not.” The President added, “The European countries, by the same token, who ignore UN Security Council resolution 2231 and their commitments within the framework of the JCPOA, they will ultimately lose on this path. Rest assured that nuclear weapons have no place in the defense and military doctrine of the Islamic Republic of Iran.” - The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Second Right of Reply by Islamic Republic of Iran, at the General Debate of the 78th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 19 - 26 September 2023). The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Comprising all Member States, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations. Each of the 193 Member States of the United Nations has an equal vote. The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. Currently made up of 193 Member States, the UN and its work are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter. The UN has evolved over the years to keep pace with a rapidly changing world. But one thing has stayed the same: it remains the one place on Earth where all the world’s nations can gather together, discuss common problems, and find shared solutions that benefit all of humanity. Joseph R. Biden President of the United States of America, addresses the general debate of the 78th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 19 - 26 September 2023). - JOSEPH R. BIDEN, President of the United States, recalling his meeting with a small group of American and Vietnamese veterans, said that, despite the painful legacy of war, “history does not need to dictate our future”. Overwhelming challenges can be resolved and deep wounds can heal if the international community chooses to stand together and recognize the common hopes that bind all humanity. In this context, he highlighted the duty of the United States to work with countries in every region, ensuring that everyone has access to health care, the environment is protected and conflicts are resolved peacefully. The United States seeks a more secure, prosperous and equitable world for all people, he said, adding: “we know that our future is bound to yours” and no nation can meet the challenges of today alone. By working together, the world made some remarkable and undeniable progress: “We avoided the renewal of a global conflict while lifting more than 1 billion people out of extreme poverty,” he said. He further underscored the need to make sure that “we are delivering for people everywhere, not just somewhere”. This challenge starts with the United Nations, “it starts right here, in this room,” he said, voicing support for expanding the Security Council and increasing the number of permanent and non-permanent members. Turning to the situation in Haiti, he spotlighted breakthroughs on hard issues, stressing that “people of Haiti cannot wait much longer”. He also drew attention to his country’s significant efforts to reform and scale up the World Bank, expanding its financing to lower-middle-income countries, and to reform the World Trade Organization (WTO). Stressing the need to forge new partnerships and confront new challenges, he said that technologies such as artificial intelligence represent both potential and peril and policies must be put into place to ensure their safety. “It is important to govern technologies, not the other way around, for them to govern us,” he added. - The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, President of the Republic of South Africa, addresses the general debate of the 78th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 19 - 26 September 2023). - South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said, “Centuries after the end of the slave trade, decades after the end of the colonial exploitation of Africa’s resources, the people of our continent are once again bearing the cost of the industrialisation and development of the wealthy nations of the world.” President Ramaphosa today (19 Sep) made his remarks at the High-level week of the General Assembly. He reiterated, “The wealth of Africa belongs to Africans, the mineral wealth that is beneath the soil of Africa, must in the end accrue to Africans.” He urged global leaders to “accelerate global decarbonisation while pursuing equality and shared prosperity.” President Ramaphosa also highlighted, “It is a grave indictment of this international community that we can spend so much money on war, in fact trillions are spending on war, but we cannot support action that needs to be taken to meet the most basic needs of billions of people in the world, needs such as addressing hunger, health, empowering woman and making sure that there is development in countries that are vulnerable.” He called on wealthier countries to “meet the financial commitments they have made,” adding that “it is a great concern that these wealthier countries have failed to meet their undertakings to mobilise 100 billion dollars a year for developing economies to take climate action.” The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Türkiye, addresses the general debate of the 78th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 19 - 26 September 2023). In his address to the General Assembly’s General Debate, the President of Türkiye Recep Erdoğan today (19 Sep) said his country has been “endeavouring to keep both our Russian and Ukrainian friends around the table with a thesis that war will have no winners and peace will have no losers.” Erdoğan said, “we will step up our efforts to end the war through diplomacy and dialogue on the basis of Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity.” The Turkish President lamented the expiration of the Türkiye-facilitated Black Sea Grain Initiative. He said, “we have prevented the threat of a global hunger crisis by ensuring the delivery of 33 million tons of grain through the Black Sea to the global markets. However, the failure to implement this agreement in all its elements has left the world facing a new crisis. This initiative had been extended three times, in part with my efforts.” Regarding Türkiye’s full membership to the European Union, Erdoğan said, “we expect the European Union to quickly start fulfilling its long-neglected obligations towards our country. Especially the ambiguous attitudes against Türkiye should be stopped once and for all.” This video is available in multiple languages. Click the settings ⚙️ button to change the language track.
